Role Purpose

To manage the customer/account operations within a $200m value-add logistics business, and to make a significant contribution to financial, operational performance and customer satisfaction, in line with customer requirements (KPIs) and the company’s financial objectives.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

The Business Unit Manager is responsible (within a Site matrix organization) for all operational activities (ie production, warehousing, materials management, inventory control, procurement, security, and operational resource and production planning) within a high-volume value-add logistics business supporting a number of global IT clients, as well as for the commercial and financial activities related to the accounts managed. The position has a significant impact on the P&L of the business and must control all operational costs accordingly. In addition, the position, supported by a number of program managers, contributes to customer management and quotes activities, and has a major influence on customer satisfaction.
The individual is responsible for :

  • Delivering on-time receiving, production and shipment performance, while meeting stringent product quality requirements (in line with customer KPIs);
  • Meeting monthly / quarterly financial objectives (primarily Operating Income and budgets);
  • Managing customer rates and internal costs, so that financial objectives and forecasts are consistently achieved;
  • Ensuring an effective Quality Management system is defined and deployed across the Site, together with driving a ‘continuous improvement’ culture;
  • Deploying a consistent approach across the operation on inventory control and materials management activities;
  • Maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction and good customer relationships;
  • Improving the overall efficiency and cost-competitiveness of the total operation;
  • Ensuring the production operations, lines and processes are effectively and efficiently organized to meet all production requirements   ;
  • Ensuring warehousing operations (receiving/stock/line feed/shipments) are effectively and efficiently managed;
  • Ensuring high levels of inventory accuracy throughout the warehousing and production processes;
  • Ensuring the engineering team effectively support and improve the production and logistics processes throughout the operation;
  • Managing new quote activity with competitive timings and rates;
  • Working with manpower suppliers to ensure a continuous supply of trained production / warehouse operators;
  • Procuring all materials and non-materials items for the account in a cost-effective manner, negotiating supplier contracts and maintaining good supplier relationships;
  • Ensuring production planning, materials planning and resource planning are all managed as efficiently as possible to support production and warehousing plans;
  • Ensuring strict adherence to operating procedures and processes throughout the functions;
  • Managing resources (people, space, equipment) effectively and meeting all health, safety and security requirements;
  • Managing all security activities across the account, to ensure the integrity of Flextronics’ and customer assets;
  • Effectively managing all the employees within the function, ensuring high levels of morale and maintaining low sickness/absenteeism/attrition.

Qualifications and experience

  • 3-5 years experience of successfully managing a similar size value-add logistics or supply chain operation ($250m revenue : 1500 employees);
  • 10 – 15 years  management experience;
  • A supply chain background, with relevant logistics management experience;
  • Successful P&L experience;
  • A knowledge of and evidence of using TQM principles (eg Lean, 6 sigma etc);
  • A track record of delivering results, with improving cost and quality;
  • A good personnel manager.

  • A good degree, preferably in Logistics, Business or Engineering;
  • At least 40 years old (as younger candidates are unlikely to have sufficient experience);
  • Good career progression so far and ambition to progress into larger roles;
  • An energetic, motivational, pragmatic leader, equally comfortable with operational detail and strategic direction setting;
  • A good communicator and team player;
  • Able to work and make decisions effectively under pressure and to cope with long variable working hours;
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).
